Collateral Damage

by Teresa Bergman

/

about

‘Collateral Damage’ starts out like a dreamy love song. But not for long. The first chorus arrives with an explosion - a powerful vocal, straight-shooting guitar and crashing cymbals. Suddenly the song pivots into a dynamic, rebellious pop-rock tune from the 90s. A warm hammond organ vibrates in the background - moments reminiscent of the Laurel Canyon in the 70s shine through the commotion. The fourth single to Teresa
Bergman’s upcoming album embodies all the quirk and creativity that defines the New Zealader’s songwriting - ‘Collateral Damage’.

An angry woman is unstable. A sweet woman is safe. Norms that still, somehow, inform us. Teresa Bergman is sick of it. In this utterly unique mix of country folk, jazz and pop-rock the New Zealander expresses her anger. Anger at a dating scene full of avoidant complexes, and anger at herself for going along with any of its games. “You read me like a brochure, you soaked me through and left me dry, an uncommitted crime.”

In part inspired by Fiona Apple and her unconventional musical experiments and in the spirit of female non-conformism, ‘Collateral Damage’ is a testament to experimental joy. In her first time role as producer Bergman recorded the percussion section of the song with random objects found in the studio - everything from shoes, spoons, glasses, and music stands can be heard in the eccentric, arrhythmic bridge section.

An enraged scream not only marks the end of the song, but also serves as a final statement. Teresa Bergman refuses to ever again be somebody’s ‘Collateral Damage’, empowering others to follow her lead.
